In The Beginning God Created

The other day I decided to read the Bible from the front cover to the back in a year. I got stuck in Genesis 1:1, which reads, “In the beginning, God created.” While reading the Bible, I tend to get sidetracked when I see something magnificent. And there are many magnificent things in the Holy Book, even in the first five words.

I can’t begin to understand how He created all there is. As a human, I can’t wrap my mind around such bigness. He is a wonder, and I’ll never understand the how. I recently heard Rev. T. D. Jakes say, “Language goes bankrupt trying to define God; he is beyond any word we could come up with to fully describe His magnitude.” I believe that’s true. We are so limited in our humanness next to the sovereignty and majesty of God.

When I was thinking about God the creator as I read those first five words, I was reminded of what He said to Jesus and the Holy Spirit in Genesis 1:26 “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” That’s a big deal for you and me. That is another mindblowing truth in a small portion of scripture. All the attributes of God the Creator can be developed in our lives. The One who created us gave us the ability to create, the One who is love created us to love, and the One who conquered has given us the ability to overcome. The list of His greatness and our potential goes on and on.

Knowing that I’ve been created in God’s image puts a new perspective on the goals I’ve set and the challenges I face. The scripture Phil. 4:13 comes to mind, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” This scripture isn’t referring to unrealistic things like climbing Mount Everest when I am not a mountain climber; this scripture refers to conquering the seasons of life and the challenges set before me. This truth should bring you and me great comfort.

Whatever is set before you today, remember Genesis 1: verses 1 and 26; you were created in His image and likeness… you’ve got what it takes to reach your goals and meet the challenges in front of you.
